Part of feeding includes a careful herd check. First be aware of how many horses should be at OHA. (The membership secretary should keep the membership appraised of this number.) Before going up on the pasture check to see how many horses are either in stalls, corrals or out on a ride (if the rider has left that information). Know before you go up to feed the herd how many horses should be there. After putting out the hay do a careful count.

If horses are missing you need to determine exactly what horse or horses are missing and contact the owner (s). It helps if you can identify all the horses in the herd and know their names. (There are Horse Id sheets in the Emergency Buckets in each pasture, and also in the White Shed.)

Then check each individual horse for any injuries or signs of distress.
