Business

The Board of the Orinda Horsemen’s Association met on April 30th, 2002 at 7 p.m. at Kim’s house.  Bronwyn provided the food.  Present were Board members Richard Brown (President), Christie Larner (Vice President), Kim Zvik (Secretary), Bronwyn Evans,  and Linda Furtado.    Absent was Anna Johnson.

Minutes for the March 26th Meeting

Are approved as amended.  Thank you Jane for organizing the West Nile clinic.  Sorry for the confusion in attributing credit to Liz.

Are Minutes too Brief?

If you have any questions on the minutes, please feel free to call or email the Secretary or President.  The Secretary will attach any supporting documentation when available.

Horse Update

Cory is at Grizzley Peak Stables.  Leo is still out at Moraga.  Freckles is still out at Santa Rosa.  Aziz (Alice’s new horse) is still in Moraga.  Beau is still out.  The Furtado’s other horse is still out.  Morris has an empty space.   Casey (Beverly’s new horse) is out in the pasture.  Riva (Liz’s new horse) is out in the pasture for some time.  Sade (Heather P.’s new horse) is in the Pavillion for 1 ½ more weeks.  Please inform OHA of updates regarding re-entering your horse or removal.  Email to the members are really helpful.

Increase Dues?

We won’t increase dues this year because our expenses are expected to be the same as FY ‘01.  Fees are to stay as is until December ’02.   They are $225 every six months.  The next payment is due June 15th.

Grazing Plan ‘02

EBMUD is in the process of building a barbed wire fence above El Toyonal including isolating Mrs. Long’s water line from the herd.  EBMUD will also clean up debris as a capital expense. We can enter through the gate there but must bring our horses out through another gate.  Thanks for Richard for arranging with EBMUD to build this electric fence.

Document Teasle Cutting

Richard negotiated getting reimbursement from EBMUD for every person hour we work cutting teasle.   Please make sure to document your work hours when cutting teasle.

Replacement Gate

Thank you Lens for replacing the broken gate at the pavilion.

Water Line to Trough at Pavillion Broken

The water line from the ring pasture to the pavilion is broken.  To fill a trough at the pavilion, you must turn on the valve at the hose bid next to the ring pasture gate next to the road.  Make sure to close it when you are done as, otherwise, water will spill out of the hole in the pipe.

Long’s Yearlings Back Again This Year

The Longs will have their yearlings back again this year.  Unfortunately, this is the same time we will have our horses in the Upper Pasture.  Mrs. Long has put more fencing on her fence to make it safer for her horses.  If you see any problems, please contact Mrs. Long or the Lower Pasture pasture manager.

Unrenewed Associate and Partner Memberships Expire

Please remind your associate members and riding partners too.  Otherwise, they will not renew.  Associate members must pay $50/year and partners $25/year.  Payment is due June 15thKim will remove them off the membership list June 15th if they do not renew.

Letting new horse out

Please do not let your new horses out before they have been quarantined a full two weeks.  Also, please warn people before you do let them out as some members may want to make extra trips up to check on their horses.  Two horses were injured this week due to the new horse.  Please communicate and consider others!

Move Horses at Designated Time

Please move the horses with other members at 10am on moving day.  If you have a last minute emergency, you may ask another member to help you move your horse.  This is why we are called a cooperative!  Ask for help, and you will get it.  Letting your horse out earlier or forgetting to move your horse can cause injury to horses and members.

Ring

Thank you Ginny for researching the options for recovering the ring.  Details are attached.  Richard will ask EBMUD if they have any contractors who may sell us sand and the under-cover for a good price.  EBMUD did not have any spare sand to give use however.  Kim will get bids.  Nina is going to help Kim solicit anonymous donations from members.  If we don’t raise enough money, we may just cover the outer track of the ring for starters.

Ring Board Removal

Should we remove two sections of the lower portion of the ring fence to enable ring toys to be moved easily to and from the ring?

Motion #1 Move to allow Liz to remove two boards from the lower section of the ring fence to move polls in and out of ring easily.  Not passed 2/3.

Maintaining a Level Ring

When you use the ring, please try and stay off the track so that the ring remains level.   You can still work your horse a equal distance from the fence if you wish, but please try and choose a new track.  Otherwise, the ring will not be level and horses can trip on the uneven footing.

Ramp

Richard will check with EBMUD to see if they have any spare gravel to give us.  We will build a ramp to the manure shed from gravel so that farm equipment can approach it as well as wheel barrows.

Motion #2?

Stall Improvement

There was some discussion about putting new boards in the center of the pavilion stalls to replace the worn out, broken ones.  Some board members were concerned that old railroad ties would not be suitable because creosote is toxic.  Pressure treated wood is too.  Also, there was some discussion about improving the drainage in the old stalls in the saddling area.  We may put gravel in those as the gravel the Furtados put in the Pavillion stalls a few years ago did a load of good.

Put Old Hay Somewhere Else?

Some members are concerned about the airborne mold emanating from the rotting hay in the ring pasture.  We are considering other locations rather than ring pasture so that horses don’t munch on bad hay in the ring pasture.

Float in Double Stall in Pavillion

Richard will ask the Pinedas to  put a float back in the trough in the double stall in the pavilion when they fix the broken pipe.   There used to be one there and it was quite handy.

Pear Orchard

This is your friendly yearly reminder to understand need to graze down this area.  Please keep horses out of the Pear Orchard only if there is a valid medical excuse to do so.  Start dieting now if weight is a concern.  Remember, that you must apply by letter to the board to have your horse exempt from Pear Orchard grazing duty.

Pavement

Please remember to park off pavement in or outside the gate at El Toyonal.  This is especially important as we enter the high fire season this year.  Fire trucks must be able to pass through this road to help residents in West Orinda.  Also, trailers can “clip” your car if they are trying to get through a narrow passage or make a turn into the pavilion.  This is the second reminder and some members have not complied.

Additional Notes

Fiddleneck season – please pick any fiddleneck you see.   This is the season and there are spots in the pasture where it is growing.  Call Fred if interested.

Morris’s space due to be filled May 8th

Loree’s leave of absence ending June 15thRichard will contact her to see if she wants to apply for an extension.

Board will vote in June as to whether or not Elise will become a proprietary member.

Thank Yous

Bronwyn – for providing food

Anonymous – for taking manure

Upcoming Events

Thursday, May 2nd at 7pm  – Next meeting at Kim’s house.   Bronwyn will provide food.

Sunday, April 28th at 10am – Move to Lower Pasture/Lower Sullivan

Business

The Board of the Orinda Horsemen’s Association met on March 26th, 2002 at 7 p.m. at Kim’s house.  Richard provided the food.  Present were Board members Richard Brown (President), , Kim Zvik (Secretary), Bronwyn Evans (),  and Linda Furtado.    Absent were Christie Larner, Liz Strauss and Anna Johnson.   Beverly James attended.

Minutes for the February 26th meeting needed no additional clarification.

AGP and Why All These Moves?

This is EBMUD’s plan to reduce weeds and promote grass growth.  EBMUD’s pasture manager, Rod Tripp, wants more pasture rotation.  When we do the rotation from UPO to LPO, we will need a fence to allow access to the water without allowing horses to go back into the LPO.

USR Development

We discussed the Long’s objection to southern access.  We are looking into other access option.  Beverly will ask EBMUD representative, Penny, to resolve.  Cost of building the fence still $450 too high.  Beverly will look at re-contacting a contractor EBMUD believes will be less expensive.  We also still need volunteers to pull out extra barbed wire and are also considering use of a metal detector.

Oakland Hills Ride Needs Volunteers

The ride is 60 miles this year instead of 50 and as a result, more people are needed.  Call Laura Fend, 925-935-8147, if you would like to volunteer.  We are loaning our trailer for them to haul manure away from the ride.

Easy Work Hours

Volunteers needed to move poop to front to prepare manure to be moved to ring by John Foughy.  This way his back hoe can easily scoop it up and save on time and labor.

Manure Ramp

Need to reengineer a solution to the ramp because John Foughy (and others in the future) cannot access manure with farm equipment.  Richard is talking to Lens about a way to make the ramp removable.  We are considering a ramp from the back instead.

Associate Members and Their Own Horses

Should associate members be allowed to ride their own horses through OHA property?

Motion #1 Move to allow associate members to ride their own horses in OHA if they provide the current OHA president with a declaration of an up-to-date vaccination for the horse.  Passed 4/0

Dogs on OHA

Members are concerned about some members repeatedly ignoring rules about dogs.  This is especially problematic in the upper pasture when they are loose and run after horses.  Also, it is problematic if they are tied up or locked in a car barking and disturbing the peace of riders and horses.  Please consider others when bringing your dog to the pasture.

Ring Sand

Should we accept anonymous donations to add up to 370 cubic yards of sand to the ring?   The ring is down to bedrock now.

Motion #2 Move to solicit anonymous donations from pasture members to purchase and spread sand in the ring.   Donations would be used only to buy and spread sand.  This would not include base drainage, grading, sprinkler system or boards along ring edge.  Passed 4/0.  Kim will work with Ginny on this.  Kim/Ginny will ask for anonymous donations.  Kim will get a bid from John Foughy to spread it out.  The rest of the proceeds would be used to buy the sand.  Diamond K may be able to give us a good price on sand.   Richard will ask EBMUD if they can get a good deal on sand.  The bid Fred got several years ago was $24/cubic yard.

Additional Notes

Congratulations to Gailyn Johnson who passed her nursing boards.

Morris’s space coming due to be filled by May 8th 2002.

Beverly close to finding her 2nd horse.  Keep your fingers crossed.

Business

The Board of the Orinda Horsemen’s Association met on February 26th, 2002 at 7 p.m. at Anna’s house.  Liz provided the food.  Present were Board members Richard Brown (President), Christie Larner (Vice President), Kim Zvik (Secretary), Anna Johnson (Treasurer),  and Liz Strauss.    Absent were Linda Furtado and Bronwyn Evans.

Minutes for the January 10th meeting need the additional clarification:

Special needs notes about horses includes any injuries or unusual behavior the horse may exhibit.

Keri Lake New Associate Member for Kim Zvik

Please welcome Keri to OHA.  Keri will be riding Pasha and working with Kim and her children.  Keri ran the children’s summer program last year at Wildcat Creek Stables.

Treasurer report

We have $7,240.97 in checking.  The budget is looking good.

West Nile Virus

West Nile Virus is a serious virus that is now hitting horses in the East Coast.  It is thought to be worse than EPS.  The West Nile Virus is expected to come to California in May, 2002 according to Liz’s source . Vaccines are hard to get.  Parker has some and you may want to consider asking for one for your horse at the March 16th vet clinic.

Long Ramp with 3 Bays for Manure Shed

Motion #1:  To have Lens build a ramp for $600 material only.  He will donate his time.  He would build a wooden ramp with cement footings along the East side of the shed the full length.  The ramp would run from the driveway across from the outhouse.  It would have 3 bays where members could dump in any of the 3 manure areas.  Lens thinks materials will cost more but this is the amount the board would like to spend.  Pass 4/1.

Manure to Ring

Should we move all the manure from the shed to the ring before it is rototilled by EBMUD this spring?  Richard will check with contractor (John Foughy) who has equipment for this.

Parking

The fire deptartment reminded us to not to park in front of gate or anywhere on pavement outside gate.  The fire department and trailers need access in and out of the gate.  Please make sure to pull your call well off the road.  Also, if you park in the pavilion, try and leave room for a trailer to park next to your car especially if you go riding.

Horses

Patches has left the pasture.  Riva is Liz’s new 2nd horse.  Riva is a Rose gray mare with 3 white socks, white blotch on left side of rump.  Her shoer is Scott Bakewell and her vet is Mike O’Brien.

Additional Notes

Get well Beverly! Beverly broke her leg.  Her husband James has been working in the USR for Bev.  We with you the best!

Worm in March.

Make sure to record USR work work hours in work book because we get reimbursed by EBMUD for the cost of your labor.
