8) Work party – Lots of work was completed – thank you all for your contributions, and thank you Sally and Kirsten for organizing.
9) Tough shed space allocation – Looking back at the 2009 minutes, the original decision was to allow one storage can for each membership (not per horse) in the white shed or the Tuff shed
a) These facilities were established for the storage of emergency supplies, pasture tools and weeding supplies.
b) The principal behind these storage facilities is not to have storage for personal belongings/ tack. A small tack box or one other item is reasonable, but storing saddles, bridles, etc… is not ok.
c) Hay and shavings should not be stored in the tuff shed/white shed.
10) OHA Website – The board decided to extend the pilot testing for another month.
11) Elise asked for and was granted an extension to July 1 to fill her space, and the board approved this.
12) Grazing rotation – members have expressed concerns about the richness of the grass in our post drought state. While the horses are scheduled to move tomorrow several alternatives were brought forward to reduce the current obesity and concerns over laminitis. It was proposed to:
a) Move the horses back to the already grazed lower Sullivan til May 30 (skipping yesterday’s move to the Lower). The thought process behind this was that the Lower grass (rye) will continue to dry out and have less carbohydrates in July.
b) Move to the Pear Orchard May 30, and then back to the Lower once the pear has been grazed down.
c) We need to have the horses in and out of the pear orchard before the fourth of July (high fire season). The predominant oat grass in the Pear is already drying out and should have even less carbohydrates next week.
d) We will need to get EBMUD’s permission and will keep everyone updated.
13) Pear Orchard Grazing Rules Reminder: The OHA Rules state:
“Members wanting to keep their horse(s) in a paddock or stall during the rotation to the Pear Orchard pasture must have a valid medical reason (for the horse or the owner) to do so. Horses may not be kept in stalls or paddocks for more than 3 consecutive days during the Pear Orchard rotation unless the member requests permission in writing to the Board and that permission is granted.”
14) Projects
